RE Continuing Education Requirements
If you are renewing to inactive status, no continuing education is required. If you are intending to reactivate an inactive license, please refer to 193E Iowa Administrative Code § 16.6.
If you are renewing to active status, then all salespersons and all brokers must complete the following prior to December 31st of their renewal year, and prior to submitting the renewal:
- 8 hours Law Update
- 4 hours Ethics
- 24 hours Commission approved Electives
The continuing education must be completed during the three calendar years of the license term and cannot be carried over to another license term. Example: If your license has an expiration date of 12-31-17 then your continuing education must be taken in 2015, 2016 and/or 2017.
At the time of your renewal you will be required to upload your course completion certificates for each course that you report. PDF format is preferred.
We can accept the following courses to meet the 24 hour elective requirement:
- Credits earned in a state which has a continuing education requirement for renewal of a license if the course is approved by the real estate licensing board of that state for credit for renewal AND none of the subject material is specific to that state's real estate license law and/or rules.
- Any course sponsored by the National Association of Realtors (NAR.)
Up to 24 hours may be taken by correspondence/home study during each three year renewal period. There is no requirement as to which course must be taken in a classroom setting.
During each three year renewal period a course may be taken for credit only once. A course may be repeated for credit ONLY if the course numbers and instructors are different. To submit a course for Pre/Post Course approval you will need to log into your "My Iowa PLB" and submit the application titled "Pre/Post Course Approval Request." .
All brokers and salespersons can, at any time between July 1 and December 31 of the year of renewal, take and pass the appropriate licensing exam instead of completing the required continuing education. You must contact the Commission to obtain an authorization letter (waiver) for admittance to take the exam. Please send your written request to take the exam in lieu of continuing education to firstname.lastname@example.org or by FAX: 515-725-9032. You must have this authorization letter (waiver) when you arrive at the testing site or you will not be allowed to take the exam. When you pass the test you will be given information on how to submit your application via our electronic licensing database, DataPro (aka "My Iowa PLB".)
Please note that there are no carry over hours on continuing education and to renew active all continuing education must be done no later than the December 31st of the year of your renewal and prior to you renewing. If you do not have your continuing education done no later than December 31st you will have to renew to the inactive status or allow your license to expire.
Licensees that both reside in and are licensed in the following states will sign an affidavit verifying that they are abiding by that state's continuing education requirements: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Tennessee.
All other states must comply with Iowa's 36 hour continuing education requirement.
All brokers and salespersons can take and pass the appropriate licensing exam instead of completing the required continuing education to activate their inactive real estate license or reinstate their expired license to active status. You must contact the Commission to obtain an authorization letter (waiver) for admittance to take the exam. Please send your written request to take the exam in lieu of continuing education to email@example.com or by FAX: 515-725-9032. The authorization letter (waiver) will be mailed or e-mailed to you per your instructions. You must have this authorization letter (waiver) when you arrive at the testing site or you will not be allowed to take the exam. When you pass the examination, you will automatically be given information on how to apply for a real estate license. Please disregard, but you will need to retain the pass notices for your records. You will need to submit a change of status or reinstatement application via our electronic licensing database, DataPro (aka "My Iowa PLB".)
The Iowa Real Estate Commission does not maintain individual continuing education records. Per 193E- 6.5(1) The commission will verify by random audit the education claimed by the licensee. It shall be the responsibility of the licensee to maintain records that support the continuing education claimed and the validity of the credits. Documentation shall be retained by the licensee for a period of three years after the effective date of the license renewal.
